Description of the Property

"Beachnut" on Nantucket Island, a beach-front, cathedral-ceilinged, rambling, one story home, features a Great Room with dining area, fireplace and large eat-in kitchen looking out to sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. There is nothing between you and the Atlantic but 30 ft of yard and beach.

The great room easily accommodates large dinner parties of 25 or more and is flanked on either side by 2 master king bedrooms with bathrooms, facing the same ocean view. One has a tub/shower combo and the other has a shower. Two bedrooms with twin beds form the rear wing and share a bathroom. The larger has ocean views.

Great, sandy swimming is right outside your front door down the short path to the beach. You can catch bluefish and striped bass or keep an eye out for seals. Early in the morning you can see the lights of the many sports fishing boats that fish half a mile out in deeper waters. Teak table and teak chairs adorn the outside deck looking out to the water.

The fireplace in the main room is encircled with a comfortable, oversized couch and plush, over-sized chairs and the large eat-in kitchen with skylight is totally equipped. Hidden in a corner armoire is the entertainment center with TV and combination Dvd/vcr player. We have cable TV.

Beachnut is informal, with a cozy feel despite the high ceilings and captures the flavor of old Nantucket. Decorated with remembrances of the family's past generations on the island, it's a great place to curl up with a book while listening to the surf and sea birds in the background. The space is perfect for 3-4 couples or 2 couples with 2 children each. There are a goodly number of water-related, Nantucket-themed and other books on the book shelves.

Other amenities include: HIGH Speed Internet, Microwave, dishwasher, washer, dryer and well-supplied kitchen including some spices. There are plenty of linens, bath and beach towels and one large cooler. Nine miles out of the hustle and bustle of Nantucket town, you can be on the beach or the deck all day and never have to pack a picnic. We're happy out at the beach!

(The house is only open from Memorial Day to 2 weeks beyond Columbus Day because it has no heat source except the fireplace and is only habitable when it is warm enough that the pipes don't freeze.)

On-Site Amenities

Great swimming and fishing right outside your front door! Best fishing is dawn or dusk, with some equipment at the house. If you're an early riser, you may see Grey Seals or Harbor Seals swimming along side the beach searching for breakfast, other times of the day also. If I don't see one on my early walk with my dog, I sit and wait for as long as I please, and one usually happens by. The Grey Seals are larger with more mottled skin color and large horse-like heads. They are less shy than the black Harbor Seals and curious enough to look at you without diving under immediately. They will come up again and again and you can walk along beside them and keep them company. Dogs make them nervous, but if you keep your distance when with your dog, you will enjoy your seal sightings.

Activities and Attractions

Walking distance to 4 star "The Wauwinet" Hotel, on list of top 10 best hotels on the water in U.S. Excellent food and ambience. This is where Arnold Schwartznegger and Maria Shriver got married. Popular spot for celebs to stay because they can take a sea plane right up to the dock, and not have to deal with the airport and crowds. (And to think I used to sing there way back when.) Nantucket Film Festival in June has become a favorite event.

Sankaty Golf Course and Sankaty Lighthouse are about 8 minutes away by car. Town is 9 miles away 20 min or so, for rental of boats and fishing charters etc. Conservation walks are 5 minutes away by car either around the cranberry bog or through the woods. Great Point, at the northeastern tip of the island is the most favorite fishing spot and is 20 minutes by 4 wheel drive over beach trails. Because of the meeting of two currents, it's a notable haven for large fish and their quarry as well as many seals. The dog has to stay at home though, since Great Point is now a federally-protected preserve for nesting sea birds and dogs are not permitted there.

A walk around the Cranberry Bogs is a pleasure and there you can take the dog. There's a large hidden fresh water pond that is frequented by herons, hawks and cormorants. The bog is owned and operated by Nantucket Conservation and most of the cranberries are bought by Ocean Spray. During the summertime you can see the yellow berries which will redden by October.
