Activities and Attractions

Captiva Cruises - Daily/hourly cruises to other local islands for shopping, shelling, and sunset a nd dolphin watching. A very nice way to spend an afternoon, and a great way to see the barrier islands off the coast of Florida. Trips to Boca Grande for shopping, Useppa for lunch, and Cayo Costa for shelling are some of our favorites. Lots of other trips to choose from. www.captivacruises.com

Captiva Kayaks - Guided kayak tours to the mangrove forests in the bay to see the abundant wild life living there. Ask to take their small nets and catch starfish and hermit crabs along the way. Being in the kayak as you listen to the very knowledgeable guide explain the habitat, birds, fish, turtles and lots of other animals is great! www.captivakayaks.com

Yo-lo Sports - You can rent just about anything transportation related from here. Golf carts, mini-cars, bikes, jet-skis and even parasailing time. The jet-skis and parasailing pick-up point is right at the beach. My grandfather likes to get a golf cart from here and zip up and down the dead end street the house is on. He takes the kids to get ice cream and generally loves riding it to the store and all over. Golf carts are widely used as transportation for those staying on the island. www.yolo-jims.com

The Bubble Room Restaurant - You'll have to go there and experience it for yourself. The eclectic collection of odd things (junk?) makes for very interesting conversation. Everyone will find something from their childhood to spark a memory. If you're over thirty I guess. You have to go there for at least dessert. www.bubbleroomrestaurant.com

Jensens Marina – A great place to watch the local manatees. There is a fresh water outlet the manatees seem to love swimming around in. Ask the guys where they are if you don’t see them right off. They will know if they are by the docks or over by the kayaks. This is also a good place to find the perfect Capt for some great half/full day fishing.

Captiva Library – They have a visitors pass available for a nominal fee. This allows access to their large selection of DVD’s for adults and kids. www.captiva-island.com/amrc/library.htm

The Mucky Duck – A fun place to watch the sunset on the edge of the beach. Live entertainment and cold margaritas make even a cloudy sunset perfect. www.muckyduck.com

Jungle Drums - An art gallery with lots of great work from well known artists... Check out the spectacular jelly fish in glass! And don't miss the other wildlife all hand made from a variety of materials. www.jungledrumsgallery.com

On Sanibel -

Golf & Tennis - The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club or The Beachview Golf and Tennis Club both offer public access to their facilities. Beautiful places to play golf or tennis. The only thing that ruins it for me when I'm there is that I have to play golf or tennis. www.dunesgolfsanibel.com www.beachviewgolfclub.com

Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge - 7000 acres of maritime wilderness and home to an incredible number of bird species. It’s a great place for bird watchers and ornithologists. You might even be lucky enough to see an alligator. We've seen one or two. www.fws.gov/dingdarling

Bailey Matthews shell museum - Some incredible shells collected over the years from Southwest Florida, as well as around the world, displayed very well. Some of the shells were used to make fascinating mosaics you have to see to believe. www.shellmuseum.org

C.R.O.W. – Clinic for the rehabilitation of wildlife. Very close to the shell museum. Established in 1968, it’s one of the nation's leading wildlife rehabilitation hospitals for tropical native and migratory wildlife. We were there when they brought a bucket of newly hatched sea turtles for the kids to look at and touch. You never know what you might see. www.crowclinic.org

Sanibel Lighthouse – A fun place to see and walk around. While you can’t go into the lighthouse, you can see what they’re catching at the pier nearby. www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=367
