Activities and Attractions
Manta is the tuna capital of the world and the key point of the Route of the Sun. It is the most important seaport in the ecuadorian coast with 2.4 km. long of stretch of beach. Because of its airport connecting to mayor cities, excellent hotels, exquisite cuisine, yacht club, water sports, night life and the hospitality of its people, thousands of tourists are attracted to this modern city. About 15 minutes drive from Manta you will find the charming town of Montecristi, home of the "Panama" hat and multiple handmade crafts. Also, following the Route of the Sun and about 2 hrs. drive you could visit the Machalilla National Park, the country's only coastal park with some 20,000 hectares of ocean area including the island of La Plata, a main tourist attraction for the abundance of bird life such as blue and red bobbies, pelicans, frigate birds and albatrosses from mid April to October. Snorkeling is permitted so you could admire the coral reef of the area. The National Park is also home of various archeological sites of the Chorrera, Salango, Manteno cultures and also pre-Inca ruins. Along this route you could visit Los Frailes, a pristine and breathtaking beach, Agua Blanca, Puerto Lopez, Puerto Cayo and other fishing villages. Also, a visit to the Central Bank Museum in Manta is a must because it exhibits ceramics of the seven cultures of Manabi from 4,200 BC to 1,530 AC. Guided tour in English is available.
