Enjoy a variety of water adventures while staying at Exuma resorts. From snorkelling safaris to glass-bottom boat tours to shark diving, opportunities to explore the crystal clear waters abound near your Exuma Island resort.
1. Snorkeling Adventure
Exuma Water Sports combines adventurous sightseeing with snorkelling on a day-long safari through 150 small islands and cays aboard the 35-foot sea rocket, 'Exzooma'. Capable of cruising in exceptionally shallow waters the excursion always takes the most scenic route to breathtaking pink-white sand beaches where you can view huge iguanas in their natural habitat. Thrill to feeding gentle stingrays and supervised swimming in the company of sharks at Compass Cay. And while everyone knows pigs can't fly, Exuma's pigs are gaining notoriety for taking to the warm waters to enjoy a relaxing swim with visitors to Staniel Cay. The highlight of the excursion is a guided snorkelling tour of beautiful Thunderball Grotto. A brief swim through a narrow, underwater opening reveals a 30-foot high rock dome with filtered light entering from ceiling holes and submerged openings creating iridescent blue water. Advance 24-hour booking is required by calling (242) 336-3422.
2. Stay Dry with a Glass-bottom Boat Tour
View the incredible marine life of the islands without even getting your feet wet by taking an exciting tour in a glass-bottom boat. The harbor side of Stocking Island offers glimpses of exotic fish set against the backdrop of stunning beaches and tranquil lagoons. Visit Crab Cay Marine Reserve, the largest island in Elizabeth Harbor and home to spiny lobster, grouper, queen conch and magnificent sea turtles. If you're up to venturing into the water, snorkels are available allowing for up-close viewing of tropical fish and living coral reefs. Three-hour guided trips depart daily from the Government dock in George Town at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Full-day trips depart the dock at 9:30 a.m. and return at 4:30 p.m. Call (242) 357-0570 for details.
3. At Home with Sharks
Dive Exuma provides the opportunity to dive and swim in close proximity with grey reef sharks at Shark Reef. The reef is home to between 10 and 20 of this smaller species ranging in size from 5 to 6.6 feet in length, weighing anywhere from 44 to 66 lbs. Although not considered to pose a threat to divers, Dive Exuma's professional guides do not feed the sharks during the adventure. They prefer to let visitors view these graceful, yet powerful creatures exhibiting natural behaviour as they glide around the reef in 35 feet of water. Grey reef sharks tend to move slowly and silently through the water, however when food is detected they can attain speeds of up to 25 mph and become aggressive quickly. If you're new to diving, take advantage of their Discover Scuba Diving program where you'll learn basic skills in the comfort and safety of a pool. When you're ready to experience the thrill of underwater breathing in the ocean, your instructor will take you out to explore the magnificent reefs off Stocking Island.
