A Ventura vacation rental is an ideal place to stay if you plan to visit the Channel Island National Park. Although the National Park is close to the mainland of California, it brings a certain kind of beautiful isolation.
The Channel Island National Park consists of five islands, namely Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara and San Miguel. The National Park is located off the coast of Ventura, just an hour's boat ride away from the largest island of the group, Santa Cruz. Each of the islands has its own hiking trails where you can see vegetation and wildlife. The Channel Island National Park is home to more than 2,000 species of plants and animals, 145 of which are unique to these islands. While staying at the one of the Ventura rentals, you can go to the one of the five islands, each offering different kinds of activities.
Anacapa Island
On Anacapa Island you'll find a 1.5 mile nature trail that is near the visitor center. It is a self-guiding trail that explores the east side of the island. Explore the native vegetation, wildlife and cultural history of Anacapa Island. Hike along the trail system and see the colorful flora that is unique to the island. You can also check out the different breeding areas on the island.
Santa Rosa Island
At Santa Rosa Island, you can take the trail that starts from the Northwest Anchorage at East Point. There is a 3 mile round trip hiking trail that leads to Water Canyon Beach. You can also hike along the sandy beach of Water Canyon.
If you prefer to see oak trees and rolling grasslands, then hike the Cherry Canyon Trail loop, which is a 3.5 mile trail.
San Miguel Island
Enjoy the hiking trails at San Miguel Island which start at the landing in Cuyler Harbor. There are no moorings or piers at this island, so upon landing at Cuyler Harbor your hiking adventure already begins. Hike along the beach at the Harbor or hike up to the Nidever Canyon to the Ranger Station. There are also several hiking trails beyond the Ranger Station. However, a backcountry permit must be obtained from park headquarters before leaving the mainland.
Santa Barbara
There are many hiking trails on this island including Arch Point Loop, Canyon View Nature, Elephant Seal Cove and Signal Peak Loop.
There are a couple of short trails, including Signal Peak Loop which is a 3.5 mile long hiking trail with a total elevation difference of 529 feet. Arch Point Loop is another short trail that is only 1 mile in length, but provides great views of the ocean and fields of flowers in season.
To check out the elephant seals in the area, the Elephant Seal Cove is a good place to start a hike. This 2.5 mile hiking trail leads up to an overlook where you can view hundreds of elephant seals.
Santa Cruz Island
Santa Cruz Island is home to a vast variety of fauna, flora and geology. You can hike along the 77 miles of coastline cliffs to explore the giant sea caves or tide pools. You can also spend an afternoon at one of the expansive beaches. A visit to the Painted Cave is a must.
Another hiking trail is also available which leads from Potato Harbor along the east side of the island, leading to Smugglers Cove.
