Lake Oconee vacation rentals are an ideal vacation location for serious outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters and anglers. This area of Georgia is known for being a popular place for refreshment. The fishing available at the lake is some of the best in Georgia, with several expert fishing guides available. If you're a hunter, you'll be sure to find plenty of game in the area. And, it goes without saying you'll enjoy the outdoors while staying at  Lake Oconee vacation homes.

Waterfowl Hunting at the Lake

Waterfowl hunters can easily hunt in certain areas of Lake Oconee and adjacent Lake Sinclair. The areas open to hunting include several waterfowl impoundments that are located below the Sinclair Dam. Hunting in this area takes place on a quota to ensure proper conservation. Some of the fowl that hunters can find include Canada geese, ring-necked ducks, wood ducks and mallards. These birds tend to be more visible in the afternoon hours. Hunters have their best chance of getting clear shots if they shoot from a brushy area in a nearby cove. Before you go hunting, check with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to find out if hunting is in season. You can also check with the GADNR to find out about any necessary licenses and permits.

Deer Hunting at Oconee WMA

The state has a designated Wildlife Management Area in Oconee. This allows deer hunters to enjoy a long hunting season, and also helps encourage sound conservation efforts. Hunters can hunt with modern guns, primitive firearms and bows. Hunters are limited to bagging 12 deer during the season. This includes two deer with antlers and 10 without. There are special hunts offered for women, the disabled, parents and children, and Honorary License holders. Several area retailers sell the necessary hunting licenses. License dealers can also provide literature explaining the current hunting regulations.

Fishing at Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair

Both of these lakes combined offer over 15,000 acres of fish-filled water. The current in the lakes generated by the Sinclair Dam provides ocean-like feeding conditions. Crappie and catfish are some of the more popular species, and you'll also find some interesting hybrids here. There are several species of bass that can be found in deeper water, especially under some of the docks adjacent to local golf courses. There is a daily total limit of 50 fish per person, with some species-specific limits. Anglers who catch largemouth bass can keep fish that are 14 inches or larger. A license is required to fish on the lake. You can buy one at one of several retail locations. Fishing licenses can also be purchased directly from the GADNR by Internet or phone.
