On a visit to Illinois, stay in a Champaign rental; you can choose from conveniently located two to four bedroom apartments, townhouses and duplexes. The city is home to the University of Illinois and several high-technology companies. With its many turn-of-the-century buildings, shops, restaurants and nightspots, downtown Champaign is a center of attraction. Here are some places to visit in the downtown area.
Orpheum Children's Science Museum
Situated on North Neil, this museum aims to sensitize children on conservation of the Earth's resources, renewable energy and pet health and care. A number of interactive exhibits explain the basics of natural phenomenon including the formation of hurricanes. A reptile park and an excavation for dinosaur remains will keep the kids enthralled. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
Downtown Streetfest
This festival of music is held on a Friday every July; the event kicks off with a "music crawl" through the downtown business areas followed by a stage event the following Saturday. Enjoy the festive atmosphere with family and friends. Other events include exhibits of rare artifacts and documents of historical significance, dedication of a time capsule and art exhibitions.
The Virginia Theatre
Opened in 1921, this is the home of the Champaign-Urbana Theatre Company. Live musical performances are held throughout the year. You can also view old films and classics with your family. The Theatre also plays host to News Gazette's classic film series and the Robert Ebert Film Festival. You can see recent movies at an inexpensive price of $2 to $3 on Tuesdays and Thursdays as of January 2011.
