Kirkwood is a community in central eastern California, in the Eldorado National Forest. Guests of Kirkwood vacation rentals will enjoy the views that surround them of mountains and valleys and will particularly enjoy being so close to the Kirkwood Mountain Ski Center, which offers premier ski trails, lessons, and other amenities. Only about 35 miles from Lake Tahoe, and close to the Nevada border, Kirkwood was founded by a cattle farmer named Zack Kirkwood in 1863. Those staying at Kirkwood cabin rentals will probably want to visit Kirkwood's original home, which is listed as a California National Landmark. If they are visiting in the summer, they will be able to enjoy the great July Fourth celebration that takes place on the mountain, which includes spectacular fireworks. Visitors who rent Kirkwood vacation homes may want to take a break from the slopes and drive the short distance to Carson City, Nevada, where they and their kids will enjoy a visit to the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada or a ride on the Mills Park Railroad. Modeled after 1800s trains, it runs through Mills Park for a 15 minute ride. Back in Kirkwood, there are numerous trails on the mountain that are fun to explore. This community has many fine restaurants. A favorite of the locals is the Tower Bar and Grill.
