Another possibility is to tour the next island over, Captiva Island, which is even less built up than Sanibel and offers wonderful views of the water and more shells too. "Ding Darling" National Wildlife Refuge & Bird Sanctuary is right on Sanibel Island as well and offers canoeing and kayaking in addition to birding. Travelers will doubtless like to view the Point Ybel Lighthouse that was built in 1884 and is still active. The area is filled with great restaurants and many of them are on the water.
