Aiken, South Carolina Vacation Rentals

The city of Aiken, which was founded in 1835, is a horse breeding and training center that is located in western South Carolina, 30 miles east of Augusta, Georgia. Those staying at Aiken vacation rentals will enjoy touring the many historic buildings in town either by walking or taking a horse-drawn tour. One of them, the Wilcox Building was frequented by Winston Churchill as a winter retreat. Those staying in Aiken cabin rentals in March will have the pleasure of attending the annual Aiken Triple Crown, which takes place over three weekends and consists of trials, steeplechase and polo competitions. If visitors are in Aiken in the fall they can attend the Aiken Steeplechase, which has occurred every October since the 1930s. Guests of Aiken vacation homes will also enjoy the Aiken Bluegrass Festival, which draws thousands of people each May. In February there is a reenactment of the Battle of Aiken, one of the last battles of the Civil War, when the Confederate cavalry ambushed the Union cavalry led by General Kilpatrick. Other attractions include the Western Carolina State Fair, a week of entertainment in October, with demolition derbies, live music, and two midways. The town has many restaurants to choose from but locals prefer Malia's Restaurant, which has wholesome food and is open for lunch and dinner.
