Newburyport Basics

Located on the south bank of the Merrimack River and at the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean sits Newburyport, Massachusetts. Originally inhabited by the Pawtucket Indians and later settled by European immigrants, Newburyport was a trading and fishing settlement for more than 100 years. In 1851, it became a city and today it is a bustling area with a lively arts and culture scene, excellent accommodations (cabins, cottages, B&B's and vacation home rentals), and excellent dining, shopping, sightseeing, and recreation. Historic sites include Old Hill Burying Ground, Cushing House Museum, Custom House Maritime Museum, Coffin House, Lowell's Boat Shop, and the Little Farm. Recreational areas are Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Joppa Flats, Salisbury Beach State Reservation, and Cashman Park and Deer Island. Visitors can expect to do plenty of hiking, biking, swimming, camping, and boating as well as bird watching and animal life viewing - bald eagles, deer, humpback whales and minkle whales, harbor seals, and more!
