Contrary to popular belief, the North Pole really isn't "The North Pole." This fairy tale town is actually located 1,700 miles south of the planet's geographical North Pole. It does get unbelievably cold here during the winter months, so if you must visit during this time, be sure to take the phrase "dress warm" to extremes. Temperatures during the winter months can dip below -30 degrees but it can feel like -60. During the summer months, however, the north Pole transforms into a major tourist attraction for families visiting nearby Fairbanks and kids eager to visit the Santa Claus House where a huge fiberglass Santa sits in front of the candy cane colored gift shop.
