Located in New York's Suffolk County on the southern side of Long Island, Fire Island has a gross land area of 19,579 acres and 80% of the area is public park. Visitors will find plenty of nightlife, bars, and restaurants (in most areas) here as well as forest areas for hiking and bird watching (more then 300 species of birds), and wilderness areas for animal watching. Surfing is a favorite Fire Island pastime in addition to wagoning, shelling (Fire Island has 30 miles of shell-covered beaches), biking, kayaking, clamming, fishing, camping, and boating. Specific points of interest include Ocean Beach, Watch Hill Campground, Otis Pike Fire Island Wilderness, Sunken Forest, and Fire Island Lighthouse.
