East Cascades Basics

East Cascades is an Ecoregion located in Washington. It includes the mountains that lie east of the Cascade crest and the foothills as they flatten into the Columbia Plateau. Roads cross the East Cascades at five points including Highway 2 to Puget Trough, Interstate 90 through Roslyn and Cle Elum, Highway 410 and Highway 12 through Mount Rainer National Park, and Highway 14 through the Columbia River and the towns of Bingen and White Salmon. East Cascade has outstanding biodiversity features including at least 20 endemic plant species, diverse coniferous forests, and the endangered Mardon skipper butterflies in southern fescue grasslands. East Cascades is also home to the nation's largest granite batholith as well as Tumwater Canyon, and Hell-Roaring Canyon. Besides biking, hiking, horseback riding, and scenic walking trails, East Cascades is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. The area is home to blacktail deer, Rocky Mountain elk, cougars, black bears, mule deer, mountain goats, 190 bird species, bald and golden eagles, and rivers and streams with coho salmon, bull trout, cutthroat trout, steelhead, Chinook salmon, and rainbow trout.
